Trusting in the Promises of God

It’s a new year and with the new year come all kinds of resolutions, ideas on how to make the future better, and declarations that this year will be our year… as if that hasn’t been said for each struggle-filled year that has already gone by. After going through a series of new years which each hold these empty promises, we quickly start to lose hope. Maybe you are coming into 2025 desperate for true answers, or maybe you have sworn off that kind of optimism entirely. Wherever you are in this first month of 2025, we would like to encourage you that, while the world will continue to fail you, God’s promises will stand forever, and He will always follow through.

All God’s promises are “yes”.

2 Corinthians 1:18-24

18 As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in Him it is always Yes. 20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put His seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

23 But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.

What does it mean “in Him it is always Yes”? Many of us go through life full of disappointments. So many people say they will do one thing and it never happens. But what this scripture is saying is that God will always follow through on His word. He is completely trustworthy. When God speaks, what He says will happen. His promises are always “yes”. They are not “perhaps” or “maybe”; they are not reliant upon your own ability to achieve them; and they are not only available to us occasionally. They are always available to us and they are always “yes”—without partiality. If you receive a promise from God, you can have the confidence that it is meant for you and fully available to you.

The key? All promises are true in Christ Jesus. In other words, they are only available to us if we are in Christ. If we are not in Christ, we are automatically disqualified from receiving His promises. The promises of God are always “yes”, but they can only be realized as we walk in Christ. As we learn to abide in Him, we will start receive promises from God, and we will learn to rely upon those promises. His promises lead us into the fullness of the relationship He desires to have with us and the life He desires to give us.

Living a life faithful to God.

As Christians, we often talk about living a life that is faithful to God. But what does it mean to be faithful to God? Being faithful is following what we know to be true. This includes living according to His Word as presented in the scriptures, but it also means taking the steps God has personally asked us to take, and relying on the promises He has given us. When we believe what He has spoken to us and act accordingly, we are following His will. That is our simple role: to hear what He tells us, understand it, and then be faithful to it. That is what it means to seek out and follow God’s will. We often think about following God’s will as some sort of rocket science. But the truth is that God is ready and willing to share His will with us. When we listen to Him and receive His promises, He will guide our steps and lead us into the beautiful life He has prepared for us—something only He can do.
