When we learn to step into God’s Covenant, there are innumerable blessings we start to experience as a result. This week, we are going to discuss what some of these blessings are and how they impact our lives.
If you have missed our earlier posts on the Covenant and would like to learn more, check out The Covenant: Blessed to Be a Blessing and The People & Place of the Covenant to catch up on our discussions of what the Covenant is and to whom it is promised.
Let’s dig into what life in Covenant with God looks like. What does God promise to those who walk with Him?
Protection from our enemies.
Even after we have been saved, we continue to live in a world which is unsafe and full of trouble. God does not take us out of this world, and He does not promise that we will never face great trouble. He does, however, promise that we will be given protection from our enemies and victory when we do encounter the battles of life.
Psalm 91:1-6
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
The Lord promises refuges, deliverance from our trouble, and protection from arrows, pestilence, and destruction. He further promises that our enemy will not be able to reach us and that no evil will befall us. Now, when we say this in a modern context, we must clarify that the statement “no evil will befall us” does not mean that no trouble will ever come our way. The Hebrew words here reference the things which irritate, annoy, and cause us frustration. God promises that these things, though they may occur, will not characterize our lives. In other words, we do not need to put up with these difficult things. They are not a way of life for those under the Covenant. Instead, God promises He will take care of these things as we encounter them (John 16:33). He will send His angels to protect us and will provide us with specific answers to the troubles we are facing.
God will be an adversary to our adversaries: such amazing power is available to us! God is our Protector, so we need not fear our enemies. When they come against us, they will actually be fighting God, who wins every time.
Goodness: His Good Treasure.
God’s goodness is His nature, which we experience when we walk with Him. This includes His plan for our lives, which is the greatest path we could possibly walk. The world is run by Satan, whose goal is to steal, kill, and destroy; yet, God assures us that though we will encounter trouble, He will create for us a life of beauty, freedom, joy, and peace—goodness!—in the midst of it.
Deuteronomy 28:11-12
11 And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
God promises to bless us and to give us goodness. We must remember, of course, that His blessing is something He determines. It will be more abundant and greater than anything we could plan for ourselves, but God’s blessing is according to His will, not ours. He says that He desires to bless the work of your hands, bringing you financial stability and enjoyment of work. He desires to bless your relationships and to provide you with godly community. When we walk alongside Him, God guarantees that our path will be full of this kind of goodness.
Peace
Peace, or Shalom in Hebrew, does not simply refer to the absence of conflict. It instead refers to the deeper peace of God which includes abundant favor, prosperity, and completeness. This is the peace of the Covenant, which is whole and full of blessing.
Ezekiel 34:25
25 “I will make with them a covenant of peace and banish wild beasts from the land, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.
Through this verse in Ezekiel, we can see that God’s shalom includes safety and security, as well as completeness, welfare, health, prosperity, tranquility, and contentment. These things all come from an abiding relationship with Christ. He is our peace, and His peace transcends circumstances. This is because this kind of peace is the result of being with Him, and He gives us the strength to not allow troubling things to draw us away from His presence and peace. Shalom is not the absence of trouble; rather, it is God’s promise that He will carry us through our trouble and grant us favor throughout our lives.
