About Abide Ministries

The Smith Family

Michael was born and raised in Northern Ohio. After completing one year of study at Colorado State University, Michael returned to Ohio, where he married his wife Renee in 1977. They have two children, Joel, born in 1990, and Emily, born in 1994.

In 1982, Michael and Renee moved to Florida where they became active for the Lord and in 1984 responded to the Lord's call into full-time ministry. In 1987, Michael and Renee attended The School of the Local Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1987-1988 academic year. In 1992, Michael was hired at New Hope Ministries in Naples, Florida, as the Minister of Education and the Director of the New Hope School of Ministries (a nine month adult education school). In January of 2000, Michael changed positions to oversee the Pastoral Care area of the church.

In 1998, Michael started ABIDE Ministries, specializing in Christian educational materials. It is Michael's desire, that by the working of the Holy Spirit, believers become dedicated to fulfilling Christ's commission to win souls, educate believers, and make disciples equipped for ministry; to bring edification to the Body of Christ and glorification to our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Statement of faith

We Believe in:

THE SCRIPTURES - The Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God, the product of holy men of old who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The New Covenant, as recorded in the New Testament, we accept as our infallible guide in matters pertaining to conduct and doctrine, while revealing the truths of the Old Testament which apply to us today. (I Timothy 3:16; I Thessalonians 2:13; II Peter 1:21)

THE GODHEAD - Our God is one, but manifested in three persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, being co-equal (Philippians 2:6). God the Father is greater than all, the sender of the (logos) Word. The Son is the Word made flesh whose name is Jesus Christ, the One Begotten, and has existed with the Father from the beginning. The Holy Spirit proceeds forth from both the Father and the Son and is eternal. He is described as our Comforter, Counselor, Guide, and Revealer of all Truth. (John 1:1; John 1:14; John 1:18; John 14:16-17; John 15:26)

THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST - We see Jesus Christ as the Son of God and believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His complete conquest over the powers of Satan, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His imminent return in like manner as He went away. (Matthew 1:18-23; II Corinthians 5:21; Matthew 27:45-28-20; Luke 10:19: Acts 1:9-11; Ephesians 2:6; Psalm 110:1)

MAN, HIS FALL AND REDEMPTION - Man is a created being, made in the likeness and image of God. But through Adam's transgression and fall, sin came into the world. ". . . all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." And ". . . There is none righteous, no, not one." Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was manifested to undo the work of the devil and gave His life and shed His blood to redeem and restore man back to God. (Romans 5:12-15; Romans 3:23; I John 3:8) Salvation is the gift of God to man, separate from works and the Law, and is made operative by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, producing works acceptable to God. (Ephesians 2:8-10) Regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential for salvation.

ETERNAL LIFE AND THE NEW BIRTH - Man's first step toward salvation is godly sorrow that brings repentance. The New Birth is necessary to all men, and when experienced produces eternal life. (II Corinthians 7:10; I John 5:12; John 3:3)

THE PRESENT MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - It is the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian that will enable them to live Godly, sanctified lives. (John 14:16-17; I Peter 1:2; I Peter 1:15-16)

SANCTIFICATION - The Bible teaches that without holiness, no man can see the Lord. We believe in the Doctrine of Sanctification as a definite, yet progressive work of grace, commencing at the time of regeneration of the spirit and continuing until the consummation of salvation at Christ's return. (II Thessalonians 2:13; I Thessalonians 5:23)

THE CHURCH (THE BODY OF CHRIST) - The church consists of all who truly believe in Jesus Christ and His atoning death, and trust Him as their personal Lord and Savior. (Romans 10:9-10; Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:24)

WATER BAPTISM - Baptism in water is by immersion, is a direct commandment of our Lord, and is for believers only. The ordinance of water baptism is a symbol of the Christian's identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. We also believe in the ordinance of Holy Communion. (Matthew 28:19; Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12; Acts 8:36-39; I Corinthians 11:23-26)

THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT - The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a gift from God as promised by the Lord Jesus Christ to all believers in this dispensation of time, and is received subsequent to the New Birth. This experience is received by faith and accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Holy Spirit Himself gives utterance. (Matthew 3:11; John 14:16; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4; Acts 2:38-39; Acts 19:1-7)

ALL THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - We believe that all the gifts of the Holy Spirit found in I Corinthians 12:4-11 are available and operational in the Church today.

DIVINE HEALING - Healing is for the spirit, soul, and the physical body, and is wrought by the power of God through the prayer of faith, and by the laying on of hands. It is provided for in the atonement of Christ, and is the privilege of every member of the Church today. (I Thessalonians 5:23; Mark 16:18; James 5:14-15; Philippians 3:12-14; I Corinthians 1:30; II Corinthians 3:18; I Peter 2:24)

THE RESURRECTION OF THE JUST AND THE RETURN OF OUR LORD - The angels said to Jesus' disciples, ". . . this same Jesus, which is take up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven." His coming is imminent. When He comes, the dead shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. (Acts 1:11; I Thessalonians 4:16-17) Following the Tribulation, He shall return to earth as King of kings, and Lord of lords, and together with His saints, who shall be kings and priests, He shall reign a thousand years. (Revelation 1:4-6; Revelation 20:1-6)

HELL AND ETERNAL RETRIBUTION - The one who physically dies in his sins without accepting Christ is hopelessly and eternally lost in the lake of fire and, therefore, has no further opportunity of hearing the gospel or repenting. The lake of fire is literal. The terms "eternal" and "everlasting" used in describing the duration of punishment of the damned in the lake of fire, carry the same thought and meaning of endless existence as used in denoting the duration of joy and ecstasy of the saints in the Presence of God. (Daniel 12:1-2; Hebrews 9:27-28; Revelation 20:11-15)
